RESEARCH
STEREOTYPES ABOUT THE USER GROUP
Researching stereotypes by the questionaire.

1.1 The assumptions I made were relatively nice and keeping in account the feelings of the other, which made me maybe slightly less honest towards myself. My assumptions were still true, but there was some information missing in my opinion.
1.2 As how many people do, I question how people become homeless and what their thoughts are of the world around them. I definitely do not want to be part of my user group, but I would like to inform myself by speaking to some of them.
2.1 The stereotypes are that homeless people always did it themselves, and that they are drug addicts. The majority of the people thinks that they will spend the money they were given on drugs and cigarettes. People think that they must be unloved, unwanted and full of hate because of this excluding behaviour.
2.2What kind of objects go with this stereotype?
think of objects like shopping carts, dirty clothes, big shopper bags, broken shoes, stolen bicycles, hats, dirty matresses, serynges, lighters, bottles, walking canes and missing teeth.
You also see that the identity and stereotype of the homeless person is mostly seen as a man, and is also being represented by childrens books, films, books and other media. this can for some people be seen as a confirmation of the stereotype that they have in their head.
3.1 The stereotype is being spread by media, or by the people who encounter homeless people in the street. People who find the homeless begging for money, might get irritated by it and this can cause them to want to spread bad opinions about them.
3.2 I think it was interesting when a man once came to me in the central station and started his story with: "I’m very embarrassed about it, but...." and this made me realize how he was aware of the stereotype that it looks very sad to see a person begging for money. Then he asked me to even though he was aware of how annoying it must be, help him with his problem by giving him some money. This was an interesting thing for me because you could see how he openly recognised the stereotype and told me that even though this was a situation as such, I could step around this and help him out.

ART IN THE PUBLIC SPACE FOR CREATURES OF THE NIGHT
our chosen creatures of the night:
HOMELESS PEOPLE
our collection:
WORKS FFROM BKOR.NL

we chose for the creatures of the night as a user group, to specify this more, we decided to connect the artworks to homeless people. we have to find our way to connect our user group to our collection. We discussed this user group with our teachers and we were told that homeless people are not allowed to sleep in the streets in Rotterdam. But we still decided to set up this scenario for if this was the case.

Instead of the already done thing of making something to physically help the homeless people, we want to try to think of something that inspires, connects and most of all mentally supports homeless people.

We found an interesting comparison with the bible. This is because the bible is a book written by multiple persons, and is nowadays still giving millions of people hope. We only wanted to extract this structure from the bible, and not take the rest of the religious aspects of it. We thought about a book for example in which homeless people could write together about whats bothering them and how they keep hopes.

Nomadland, a fil by Cloe Zhao.
In the film is being pictured how somebody is struggling with the various problems, mental battles and tough times living in a van.
This of course is still a voluntary decision which being homeless in a city is probably not.

Mapping of the collection:
Since we try to give support to the homeless people, I tried to look for sculptures that could maybe give hope and calmness to those who need it. I looked for signs of this in both it’s appearence, title, location and materials.

visual metaphor

We decided to all do our own mapping of our own perspective on the collection, which resulted in us all being intrigued or interested by different aspects of the works.

Het Gezin by Chris Elffers
The work symbolizes the connection between a family that a homeless person might be missing, but at the same time it’s also maybe a cherished memory of the past. somebody might be feeling safe by seeing this sculpture.

This work literally means "carry each others burdens". It could be a support to somebody being homeless by knowing that there is people who want to help with carrying the burden. To know that we don’t have to face this world by ourselves.

ARDUINO WORKSHOP
How could I use the arduino coding and techniques in the design of my interface?

I could make a control panel that would change the ambient lighting on the artworks to equal the users feelings about the piece.

I could make a pointer like the twister arrow that would change the colour of the lights on the artwork by turning the pointer to a mood.

I could make a music playlist that could be played from the artwork and the songs can be adjusted to the best fitting according to the user by saying the names of the songs.
